Epicet Media Incorporated (EMI) is a media production company, focused primarily on the production, acquisition, and publishing of literary works for young adults.

 

What we do:

 EMI has two basic functions:

 

Publishing: Epicet Media produces and acquires literary works under several genres for publishing, with a primary focus on coming-of-age stories that emphasize racial and class diversity. In addition to distribution of e-book and physical copies of works, EMI will offer access to select literature through its designated website. EMI will produce, acquire, and publish music as an accessory to literary works. These projects will be known as booktracks.

Promotion of Literacy: Epicet Media is devoted to the advancement of literacy throughout the United States and across the world. According to the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (completed most recently in 2003, and before that, in 1992), 14 percent of adult Americans demonstrated a “below basic” literacy level in 2003, and 29 percent exhibited a “basic” reading level. Epicet Media has three central focuses: free distribution of published works targeted specifically to young adults; educational presentations promoting literacy in a tour of secondary schools nationwide; a YouTube channel designated to in-depth exploration of literary and writing topics.

Who EMI Sells and Promotes to:

  1. Students ages 12 to 24 are our target audience. The published works and music are written specifically for the young adult reader. 
  2. Adults ages 24-65. Fifty-five percent of YA readers are adults, and thus, we expect to have major crossover in this area.
  3. Challenged readers in lower income communities as well as minorities. The works we produce and acquire have a deliberate emphasis on promoting diversity in both race and class. Readers will have the opportunity to see themselves in these works and thus identify with them. Statistics reveal that approximately 75% of welfare recipients and their children are functionally illiterate. We specifically target these groups to move them to functional literacy and beyond.

 Many free or deeply discounted works accessible to young adults is below English literacy standards.

Solution

EMI offers free and deeply discounted works that are both engaging and stretch the literary competency of young adults.

 

Problem

Aside from stories whose emphasis is placed directly on race and class issues, many minorities do no find a great deal of works that include non-white characters as more than accessories.

Solution

Many minority readers who do not ordinarily find examples of themselves in more mainstream works will have several works to choose from, that will go beyond the bifurcation of white or African-American literature. Racial, socio-economic, and religious diversity will be greatly nuanced. 

 

Problem

The reading experience, a generally participative experience, is often only fully realized through in-person book clubs among a limited number of people.

Solution

The online nature of these works will make a platform through which a great number of readers can engage in reading together through weekly episodes, not having to wait until the entire work is finished to share overall opinions.

 

Problem

There is not often a non-literary draw to reading for young people who do not ordinarily read in their leisure time.

Solution

Our interactive, contemporary YouTube channel as well our associated music will endeavor to target those who would not otherwise be inclined to read. As these musical projects will relate directly to the literature we produce and publish, it will garner interest, thus working as a marketing tool.
